From Whangārei to the World: Orama’s Inspiring Maritime Journey
Starting in Whangārei
Orama joined us in December 2022 to complete her 1-week STCW course in Whangārei. With her sights set on a career in the maritime industry, she returned to Auckland eager to dive into interior and stewardess work. However, breaking into the yachting world was more challenging than she anticipated.
Looking back, Orama acknowledges that consistency is key—both online and in person. “I tried my best,” she reflects, “but I had itchy feet. I just wanted to get out there and stuck into work as soon as possible.” Despite facing setbacks, Orama never let obstacles deter her.
Taking a Leap of Faith
Determined to pursue her dreams, Orama made a bold decision: she booked a one-way flight to Nice, France, in May 2023.
In France, she embraced new experiences, made lifelong friends, and dock-walked in Monaco, Cannes, and Antibes. Staying in a hostel for job seekers in Antibes, she quickly discovered how competitive the yachting world can be. While she didn’t secure seasonal work, Orama sees her time in France as a valuable chapter. “Travelling opens your mind and brings new challenges every day,” she says.
Finding Her Footing in Sydney
With no plans to return to New Zealand, Orama set her sights on Sydney, Australia. Here, she landed a role with Chapman Yachting as a stewardess, primarily working on day charters during the busy October-to-December season. While things have slowed down since New Year’s, she’s optimistic about finding opportunities overseas and continuing her journey.
Lessons Learned Along the Way
Orama’s story is filled with valuable insights for aspiring maritime professionals:
- Build Your CV: Experience is everything in the yachting industry. Every job, no matter how small, contributes to your credibility.
- Start Local: For Kiwi girls starting out, Sydney and the Gold Coast are ideal. They offer visa-free work opportunities and access to jobs while you search for the right maritime gig.
- Stay Resilient: The journey can be tough, but persistence and a positive attitude are key. As Orama says, “If it’s really what you want, it will happen.”
Looking Ahead
When it’s time to renew her STCW certificate, Orama plans to return to Training 4 Safety. “I’d love to complete it with you again,” she says.
Her story reminds us that success isn’t always linear, but every step—even the challenging ones—is an opportunity to grow.
